In order to obtain a license to work as a Pharmacy Technician in the state of California, you are required to fulfill the prerequisites outlined in section 4202 of the Business and Professions Code.

- Certification Program for Pharmacy Technicians Offered by the National Healthcare Association (ExCPT) The Board will begin accepting ExCPT certificates with an effective date on or after January 1, 2017, beginning on that date. Certifications in ExCPT that were earned before to January 1, 2017 will no longer be recognized.

Are You Inquiring About the Progress of Your Application to Be a Pharmacy Technician?
- Before inquiring about the status of your application, please let the board forty-five days to process it.
- If there is anything missing from your application, the board will let you know via letter.
- If you do not get a letter informing you of any deficiencies, please visit the website of the board on a daily basis to see if your license has been granted.
- Please visit the board’s website and use the “License Search” function to see whether or not your license has been issued. Proof of licensing can be obtained by checking the individual’s credentials on the board’s website.
- A third company is responsible for printing and mailing licenses to applicants. New licenses will be mailed to the address of record that is kept on file with the board and should arrive between four and six weeks after an existing license has been issued.
It is important that you read the following information on the renewal of your license as a pharmacy technician.
- Around ninety days before the day when a license is set to expire, renewal letters are mailed out to the address that is on record for the license.
- In the event that you do not get a renewal notification, you are able to go the board’s website and download the Online Renewal Application. You, as the licensee, are the one who is responsible for keeping track of when your license will run out.
- You may check if your driver’s license has been updated with your current address by visiting the website Verify a License and completing a search there.
- According to clause (e) of section 4402 of the Business and Professions Code, your license will be terminated if you fail to renew it within the allotted time frame, which is ninety days before the expiration date.
- After the license has been revoked, you will be required to submit a new application (which must include all the necessary documentation) and fulfill all of the prerequisites that were in place at the time of your reapplication.

If you want to be considered eligible to take the CPJE after your current eligibility has expired, you will need to submit a new application to the board. Use the application for Pharmacist Licensure and Examination, which may be acquired from the board’s website and submitted in order to reapply for the position. The existing policy only permits one try at the exam per applicant.
