What is the difference between a pharmacist and a doctor?

What is the difference between a doctor and a pharmacist? – It is usual practice for pharmacists to work in drugstores and other retail settings, where they are responsible for filling prescriptions and attending to the requirements of customers. Some pharmacists find employment in hospitals, where they assist other medical professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of patient symptoms and illnesses using various medications.

  • Doctors are the medical professionals who are responsible for diagnosing and treating patients, including writing prescriptions that pharmacists fill for purchase.
  • Pharmacists provide one type of healthcare service, but doctors are the medical professionals responsible for diagnosing and treating patients.

One other contrast that can be made between pharmacists and physicians is that physicians interact directly with their patients, whereas pharmacists spend their days in a laboratory setting, isolated from both patients and clients. On the other hand, pharmacists in retail environments are sometimes in a position to provide patients advice and educate clients about prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals.

How to become a Doctor of Pharmacy?

In Portugal, students interested in becoming pharmacists must first complete four years of elementary school, followed by five years of preparatory school, and finally three years of high school. Afterwards, they must take a series of standardized tests at the national level.

  1. The procedure is the same regardless of the degree the student pursues, be it in medical, engineering, or something else.
  2. The student must first get a master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (which is the academic counterpart of the PharmD program) from one of the nine Pharmacy colleges, each of which has its own unique and extensive set of requirements.

This must be done over the course of six years (5 with the uniformities in EU teaching). After finishing the program, students are awarded the academic title of “Doctor of Pharmacy.” The graduate is then eligible to apply for membership in the “Portuguese Pharmaceutical Society,” also known as “Ordem dos Farmacêuticos” in Portuguese.

This is the entity that serves as the regulating body for the profession of pharmacist in Portugal. Following the completion of the enrollment process, the title of Pharmacist will be awarded. After graduation, pharmacists have a virtually unlimited number of career options available to them, including but not limited to: community pharmacies; drug development; fundamental or applied research; biotechnology; forensic sciences; toxicology; regulatory affairs; clinical analysis; law enforcement (scientific police); bromatology; drug marketing; regulatory authorities; university teachers; and so on.

Additionally, the Pharmacists have the option to become specialists in one of the following fields of work: the Pharmaceutical Industry, Regulatory Affairs, Hospital Pharmacy, or Clinical Analysis. Each area of specialty calls for the completion of an extra professional study program lasting five years and being conducted by an instructor with expertise in that field of knowledge.
